Ever have the frustration of trying to change the setting of an applied filter on a layer but cant? Smart filter will be your solution.

Applying smart filter on a layer allows you to remove, adjust, rearrange and hide existing filter at ease. To use a smart filter, follow the step below.

Step 1

Before you can use a smart filter, you must firstly convert the layer into a smart object. To do so, simply right click on the layer and select ‘Convert to smart object‘. You should see an icon on the bottom right of the layer’s thumbnail. That will mean that the layer is now a smart object.

Alternatively, you can also convert the layer for smart filter via filter – Convert for Smart Filters. You will be prompted that the layer will be converted to a smart object first. Just click ‘ok’ on the alert and you are done.

Steps 2

After you have enabled the smart filter, you can now add filters to the layer and the filter options will be shown below the layer.

Several things you can do with the filter options:
1. Hide/Show filter effect on the layer.
2. Delete away filter.
3. Adjust the order of the filter.
4. Adjust the opacity and blending options of the filter. (To do this, simply double click on the icons on the right side of the specific filter.)

Now enjoy.
